This is my third 'bigger' piece.
I was in kinda "dark" mood so i wanted to paint something with strong, dark atmosphere.

No ref, inspired by John Howe. (looked up to some of his works to gain idea of how to paint textures and such)
Painted in April 2004 in Photoshop 7 with Genius Wizardpen tablet. Took me a lot of time, about 30 hours i think...

edit: i brightened and contrasted it a bit.

Beautiful texture and shading on the airbrushing.

nice, sullen reds in the lava -- and in the body of the horse

only improvement I could possibly suggest is if you had the light from the lava reflected a little in the louring clouds

Yup, it looks better this way. The other one was good too though. I like this one better because it looks abit lonely with the horse by itself...
I really love this piece. The strong red and the black clouds create a great atmosphere. The horse looks great and the lava (?) inside it was done amazingly. Also very cool how you did the rocks to look like faces. The shadow of the horse also adds a lot to the painting, dunno why but it looks like it really is important. Fav!
